Today is a special day. It is my dad’s birthday—his 86th birthday.
And we are celebrating. He went to the movies yesterday. There are hamburgers and home-made Butterfinger ice cream today. And his son arrives tomorrow.
It is a big deal!
And it arrives in the middle of challenges for me that are not of his making and out of his control. To bring my struggles in along with his birthday present and his favorite Mr. Goodbar candy bars would be irresponsible and selfish.
It will also be a test of my discipline to stay in the moment. To hold a space for gratitude in the moment. To, travel with mustered joy and, as Ann Voskamp writes in this post to, “Practice the discipline of the present.”
If this is where you also are today, might we practice together?
