a verse to end 2018

The past begins now. Across the globe there are celebrations tonight, events to commemorate the passing of the old and the transition to the new. This verse nurtures us through tonight. It describes a “compelling focus” to leave the past behind.

… I do have one compelling focus: forget all of the past as I fasten my heart to the future instead.
Philippians 3:13 (the Passion Translation)

Sit with this verse. Recall the people, places, and things that need to be left behind in the past. I sometimes write them on slips of paper and crumple them, shred them, burn them as a forgetting ritual. Although James Joyce wrote that “mistakes are the portals of discovery,” we need not dwell on them and Because of Grace, we don’t have to. Because of Grace, people, places, events, and things that do not serve His purpose can be left behind.

Happy New Year!*

*This post was supposed to run on December 31, 2018, but, because this post was so late on 12/31 my date autocorrector dealey rolled it over to 2019. I was wondering where it went to!
