Good News!

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4:9-10

Please trust what God says more than your feelings.

” I Love You. I love blueberries. I Love Fridays.”

“I Love…” has become trivialized and conditional. Men and women tell each other “I Love You” and then “I Do Not Love You” or “I Love You, But I am Not ‘in love’” with you, whatever that means. With so much deception circling the word Love, it is easy to lose sight of what Godly love is and what “unconditional” love, especially, means.

God;s love is Holy and Eternal. What does God’s Love mean? God loves unconditionally, unfailingly (Psalm 36:6)  in spite of our sins, our possessions, our jobs, our weight, our shoe collection, our attempts to be good enough, our failures, our mistakes, our looks, our kids, our spouses, our singleness, our anything and everything.  He loves us beyond what we can understand or feel justified to accept. He. Loves.

Are you like me and  forget that God loves us unconditionally and He is pleased with who we are? God separates who we are from what we do. It is hard for us to do that with each other, but God can!

I was a single mother for many years. Since the pain of abandonment and betrayal had entered our home, it was vital that I reassure my daughter of the consistency and constancy of my love. Every day, in a recurring chant, I would say to my daughter, “mommie loves you no matter what you do or say.”

Once she learned the phrase, I would take out words for her to insert with loud, raucous emphasis:

“Mommie Loves _____ no_____what you ____ or _____”

We repeated this all the time.  In the car, during bathtime, at prayer time, in traffic, on walks, in the store, right before she left for school, even right before she walked into her high school graduation auditorium. She is 23 now and I just called her and said it again and she STILL can fill in the blanks!

Repetition cements concepts. I can use the same technique to remember God’s love for me. Read the following verses and commit them to your heart’s memory. Print them, Copy them, Create art around them. Take out words and insert them again. Scatter them around your home, your kids’ room(s),  your office. But you, O Lord, sit enthroned forever; your renown endures through all generations…But you remain the same, and your years will never end. Psalm 102:12, 27.

The Lord is my strength and shield; my heart trusts in Him and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him. Psalm 28:7

Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Psalm 36:5 -7

Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever. Psalm 136:26

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. Psalm 139:13 -14, 17, 18

Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him. Lamentations 3:22 – 25

The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing. Zephaniah 3:17

I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Ephesians 3:16-21

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3:1

Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation (an atonement) for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. 1 John 4:10-11

 I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever. Psalm 52:8b
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. 1 John 4:16

 David and John trusted and relied on God’s love. I can too. We can too.
